55pc of homeless families are holding down jobs

-

More than half of homeless families in temporary accommodation have a member in work, figures show.

Fifty-five per cent of families have at least one breadwinner despite having nowhere stable to live, Shelter’s social housing commission found.

It estimated that there are currently around 33,000 “working homeless”, which has risen from 19,000 in 2013.

The charity analysed Government data on temporary housing, benefits and employment and conducted a tenant survey. It said the increase has been caused by “expensive private rents, the ongoing freeze on housing benefit and a lack of social homes”.
