Whip’s message to David Davis

One of Theresa May’s whips told David Davis he would be “more powerful” as a backbench MP than he was in the Cabinet.

The unknown MP, sent Mr Davis a note expressing “sorrow” at his departure. Mr Davis told the Sunday Express the letter said “I’m very sorry you’re going, etc etc” but the last paragraph said: “But it strikes me you might be more powerful where you are than where you have been before.”
