Older, better drivers

-

SIR – I am still driving at the age of 80 (Letters, July 21) and regularly make long journeys, as my son lives near York and my daughter in Wokingham. I also drive in Europe. However, I never drive for more than two hours without a break.

It would be self deluding to think that I was as good a driver as I was 20 years ago, and I think the major difference is in reaction times. I therefore try to leave more space between me and nearby cars. At the moment I have had an accident-free record since passing my test in 1961.

Judging by what I see, it is younger, impatient drivers we should all be worried about. Mike Aston
