Sir John Major as a front-man for the relaunch of Project Fear over no deal on Brexit

-

SIR – I was incensed yesterday, here on a holiday to Britain, to see Sir John Major on The Andrew Marr Show.

He is, quite simply, reigniting Project Fear, which got it so wrong first time around. They spent millions of taxpayers’ money on a country-wide leaflet drop propounding their unfounded woes. There is no reason to trust those behind it this time either. David Conroy

SIR – Sir John Major stated yesterday that a small group of Conservative MPS supporting Brexit were interfering with the process for leaving the EU. In fact, this small number of MPS are representing the 17,419,742 people who voted to leave the EU.

When will the House of Commons actually start to represent these people? Julia Wykeham-martin

SIR – The public can apparently now expect weekly no-deal briefings. This sounds very much like a new instalment of Project Fear. Trevor Norris

SIR – I read with increasing bemusement the new Project Fear terrors being created about what happens if we leave the EU with no agreement, as looks increasingly likely. The Irish PM has been correctly slapped down about claiming aircraft wouldn’t be able to fly over Ireland.

Now we are being told we won’t be able to drive in Europe without an International Driving Licence. How come I can drive in the United States with a UK driving licence? Jonny Seccombe

SIR – Over four million 20ft container units pass through Felixstowe every year, on 3,000 ships. The vast majority are from the Far East. There are no queues of ships at Felixstowe and no hordes of customs or standards officers. Somehow or other this huge amount of foreign cargo passes seamlessly through us into the EU.

Another large quantity passes easily through Rotterdam. Lorries pour over the EU borders all around the bloc. Why should there be long queues of lorries and ships at our EU borders after Brexit? Why are we different?

Similarly, why is the border in Ireland such a huge problem, for such a minute amount of trade? We should say we are imposing no tariffs on trade from the Irish Republic – and are happy with the standards of the goods. Thus, there is no need for a border from our perspective.

Let’s have the clean Brexit that we voted for. If on WTO rules – so be it. Peter Harrison

SIR – So, Olly Robbins, a career civil servant, spends months putting together a White Paper that splits the Cabinet and which the EU refuses to use as the basis for negotiations. He is then paid a bonus on top of a very healthy salary. It is another example of public money being used to reward failure.

Surely it’s time to call the EU’S bluff and walk away. David Hutchinson

SIR – Your Letters column often refers to the role of Olly Robbins as the Prime Minister’s Europe adviser. Readers will be glad to know that the European Scrutiny Committee, having invited him to appear in front of the Committee several times since February 28 (which the Prime Minister declined to allow) therefore unanimously decided to issue a summons for his appearance.

After the summons, the Prime Minister changed her mind, and he should appear in front of the Committee to answer our questions about the conduct of the Government’s EU negotiations.
