John Major threw cushion at aide who criticised his clichés
Sugar-coated advice
JOHN MAJOR hurled a cushion at a female aide after he was criticised about his “clichéd” public speaking style, newly released government papers show.
A handwritten note from Andrew Turnbull, his principal private secretary, reveals criticism of the then new prime minister had to be sugar-coated.
The 1991 document reads: “May I, at the risk of having a cushion thrown at me, as was Judith’s fate, offer some comments on your speaking style.”
It is understood Mr Turnbull was referring to Judith Chaplin, Mr Major’s political secretary.
A friend of Mr Major last night insisted it was “probably thrown in jest”.
Mr Major replied: “Many thanks – I don’t have a cushion to hand!”
