Woman watching ‘sea sparkle’ fights for life after 20ft fall
A WOMAN was left fighting for her life after plunging into the sea as she tried to look at a luminous “sea sparkle” phenomenon.
Kirsty Williams-henry, 27, fell 20ft onto rocks when she slipped from a pier in Port Talbot shortly before 11pm on Saturday.
She had joined more than 100 onlookers to witness the rare spectacle known as “sea sparkle”, caused by a bioluminescent plankton, which makes the water shimmer with blue light.
Known as Noctiluca scintillans, the plankton emits a dazzling colour when disturbed.
The organisms have been spotted regularly illuminating waters along the Welsh coast during the heatwave.
Ms Williams-henry had been admiring their glow from the breakwater on Aberavon beach in Port Talbot when she lost her footing and smashed on to the rocks. She was left with “multiple injuries” and taken to Morriston Hospital in Swansea, South Wales Police said.
Jules Newton, who called 999, said: “She fell onto rocks. It was a horrific accident. The pier can be treacherous. I would avoid it and just paddle at the water’s edge.”
