Britain must not waver on the death penalty

-

SIR – I am horrified that we may collude with the United States by subjecting the former killers of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant to the possibility of a death sentence (report, July 22).

They are villains of the worst kind, but we should not change our stance on the death penalty. We appear to be getting round it by giving the US the opportunity to carry out executions on our behalf.

Decisions like this should not be handled secretly. Such a fundamental change in our attitude towards capital punishment should be debated in Parliament – and I for one would campaign strongly against it. Kel Prince Rothley, Leicestershire

SIR – The Home Secretary rules that the two Isil terrorists, who have rightly had their British citizenship revoked, can be tried in the US. Outcry from our elected representatives.

Meanwhile, the general public looks on with amazement. Persecute our soldiers for doing their duty, but treat terrorist murderers with kid gloves. MPS seem unable to grasp how ordinary citizens view things. Mick Richards
