Mrs May is handing rule to unelected bureaucrats wedded to Brussels

-

SIR – Theresa May has made clear how Brexit is now to be managed. The Brexit Secretary, Dominic Raab, will be subordinate to a civil servant, Olly Robbins. Mr Robbins will manage Brexit and keep the Prime Minister informed of his decisions and progress as he sees fit.

Thus the democratic decision by the British electorate to end rule by unelected bureaucrats in Brussels is to be implemented by unelected bureaucrats in Whitehall, whose sympathies lie squarely with Brussels.

Surely Mr Raab’s only honourable course now is to resign and trust that Theresa May will follow his example? Roger Ball

SIR – When I heard that the Prime Minister was taking personal control of Brexit negotiations, I immediately thought of Tsar Nicholas II taking personal control of his armies in the First World War. Paul Grove

Liss, Hampshire SIR – I hadn’t realised that the Prime Minister had presidential power. I had always thought that the position was first among equals. Terry Waters

SIR – Just as the most recent Yougov poll shows that only 16 per cent of voters think Mrs May is handling Brexit well, she announces that she is taking personal charge. Yelena Mccafferty

SIR – Mrs May has never taken control of anything since she became Prime Minister.

She has shown herself well capable of acting in a duplicitous manner, which led to the resignation of David Davis, and this announcement will be proved in due course to be another opportunity for her to act similarly.

Not only does she possess no leadership qualities, but she also now shows herself to be devoid of integrity. The sooner the Conservatives get rid of her, the sooner the party, and the country, will be in a better place. John Drew

SIR – Over the past 45 years I have both joined and left a number of clubs, associations or trade bodies, and have managed to achieve my departure with cordiality. I am at a loss to understand why, having taken the democratic decision to leave the EU, the people of the United Kingdom are being treated as if they had been expelled from the EU and are being fined for some heinous act. SIR – We know what happened when Mrs May took control of the general election last year and nearly allowed Jeremy Corbyn to run the country.

Now she will let Jean-claude Juncker run the country, and he’ll be laughing all the way to his wine cellar. David Vetch
