Born in Lahore to an affluent Pashtun family.

1971

First Test cricket appearance for Pakistan, aged 18, against England at Edgbaston.

1975

Graduates from Oxford and takes consistent place in national team.

1982

Becomes captain of national team.

1992

Leads Pakistan to World Cup victory. Retires from sport and devotes time to philanthro­py.

1995

Marries Jemima Goldsmith. They divorce in 2004.

1996

Founds his own political party, Tehreek-e-insaf (Justice Movement).

1997

The new party wins less than 1 per cent of the vote.

2002

Party takes a single seat in the elections. Khan fills it himself.

2007

Khan is imprisoned during a crackdown against critics of President Pervez Musharraf.

2008

Boycotts elections.

2013

Polls over 7 million votes.

2018

Set to take power as PM.
