No-deal apocalypse

-

SIR – Theresa May confirms exactly where she’s coming from when she talks of stockpiling goods and medicines in case of a no-deal Brexit (report, July 26).

This is ridiculous. Project Fear is alive and kicking. David Smith

SIR – I am not disturbed to read that the Government wants to ensure adequate supplies of food and medicine, though I am not sure why Brexit should cause supply problems.

What worries me a great deal is the implication that reserve stocks are not maintained as a matter of course. Andrew Smith

Epping, Essex

SIR – I agree with Richard Pearson (Letters, July 24) that anyone with experience of moving goods will understand what needs to be done after Brexit.

From 1965 until 1985, I was employed by HM Customs and Excise (as we were then) on the freight movement of goods. I can well remember the process that was required to move duty paid (or duty not paid) goods. It worked very well.

There would be no real problems in reverting to the old system, because we have computers to deal with the paperwork. All that needs to happen is for someone with that relevant experience to be consulted. But what do old people know about anything? Mike Hodge
