Branded country

SIR – Tony Service (Letters, July 26) is puzzled by what makes a town “historic”. Much more irritating is the tendency of large areas to claim distinction in relation to certain events or people. Driving locally I enter “1066 Country”, and swathes of countryside are devoted to Jane Austen. Michael Staples
