Your supply of insulin could be at risk, PM told

- By Laura Donnelly HEALTH EDITOR

MANY patients – including the Prime Minister – could be “seriously disadvantaged” in the event of a no-deal Brexit, the head of the UK’S medicines regulator has said.

Sir Michael Rawlins, chairman of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, said that the supply of medicines such as insulin, used to treat diabetes, could be disrupted if the UK exits the EU without a deal.

Warning that the UK imports “every drop” of insulin that it uses, he said the situation was particularly difficult because its storage has to be temperature-controlled during transit.

Theresa May has type 1 diabetes and is known to use insulin to control it.

Speaking in a “personal capacity” to The Pharmaceutical Journal, Sir Michael said that the Government needed to “work out how” the supply of some medicines were going to be guaranteed in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

The issue would affect all patients with diabetes who rely on insulin – “not least the Prime Minister” herself, he said.
