Brontë branding

SIR – The pursuit of branding (Letters, July 27) here in Haworth is by some seen as verging on the kitsch.

I write looking over the road to the main car park in the village, branded as the Brontë Village Car Park. We have the ill-defined but none the less stunning Brontë Country, which stretches out behind my house over the moors

But beyond such predictable branding, we have the less expected Brontë Canine Services, Brontë Precision Engineering, Brontë Care Services, Brontë Whirlpools (bathroom shop), Spirits of Brontë Drinks Company, Brontë Builders, Brontë Hairdressing Salon, Brontë Taxis and the Brontë Balti.

One suspects, though, that the subtlety of the Villette Coffee House is lost on the majority of visitors, who are said by those watching from the pub to be Brontëing here. David Pearson
