May spreads fear instead of fighting for Brexit
SIR – If Theresa May put as much effort into Brexit as she does into scaremongering, a satisfactory deal would be concluded.
Instead, she spends her time telling us how difficult life would be with no deal, in order to get us to accept the appalling plan she is peddling. Charles Penfold

SIR – Emergency supplies being stockpiled, the Army put on standby. What next – martial law? RP Gullett
Bledlow Ridge, Buckinghamshire
SIR – We hear that the Government is considering what action to take to prevent fake news destroying our democracy. Should it start by abandoning Project Fear Mark Two? Roger Hockin
Southampton SIR – You report (July 30) that Steve Baker, who quit as a Brexit minister over the Chequers blueprint, “commissioned a report on the cost of a no-deal Brexit for each member state while he was in office and that it would help convince EU member states that a free-trade deal on Brexit is in their interests”. Why, then, has this report never been published? Ray Lines
Romsey, Hampshire
SIR – Lord Owen (Interview, July 30) is absolutely correct to state that we are in a “very dangerous” situation.
The people of this country, who were assured the referendum would be binding (“We will implement what you decide”), have been slighted, lied to and betrayed. Our “elites” are like the First Estate in France on the eve of the Revolution. There is nothing more despised than a ruling class openly contemptuous of its own people. Philip J Ashe
