Suspect held after child was shot in migrant van

A suspected people smuggler has been arrested in Britain after DNA allegedly linked him to a van involved in a police chase and shoot-out in Belgium that left a two-year-old girl dead.

Mawda Shawri was shot in the face when Belgian officers opened fire at the Peugeot van’s tyres in May. The driver, suspected of trying to smuggle 30 people into Britain, fled the scene.

A 25-year-old Iraqi man, whose DNA matches that found on the van’s steering wheel, was arrested earlier this week.
