Tech world waves hello to Elon Muskbacked robot hand

- By Joseph Archer

ELON MUSK’S non-profit organisation Openai has revealed its advanced robotic hand system, which is able to teach itself to manipulate everyday objects.

The research company, set up by the tech entrepreneur to “benefit humanity as a whole”, thinks the hand, known as Dactyl, is “one step closer to bringing true artificial intelligence in the real world”.

Dactyl learnt its movements using computer simulations, involving repeated trial and error experiments with a virtual robot hand. The information was then transferred to the real robot hand. Matthias Plappert, from Openai’s robotics team, told The Daily Telegraph: “While the hand can currently only hold something just over 2kg, it has great dexterity and degrees of freedom, making it as good or a bit better than a human hand.”

The system uses the same algorithm and training method that Openai has developed to beat humans in esports game Dota 2.
