England stutter after Root run-out

-

Joe Root’s run-out set off an England collapse on the first day of the Test series against India. The hosts lost six wickets for 77 runs after the England captain, attempting a risky second run, lost his wicket to a direct hit on the stumps from his opposite number, Virat Kohli. Root was England’s leading batsman with 80, but continued his unwanted run of failing to convert any of his 10 previous Test half-centuries into hundreds. Jonny Bairstow made 70 with the score on 283-9 at the close of play. Sport, pages 1-5
