May overrules Javid to insist on Uk-only passport lanes

- By Gordon Rayner POLITICAL EDITOR

BRITISH passport holders will have their own lane at UK airports after Theresa May overruled the Home Secretary’s decision that they would be a waste of money.

The Prime Minister is determined that Uk-only lanes should be created as a “tangible” benefit of Brexit, putting her on a collision course with Sajid Javid, the man tipped as her successor.

Mr Javid ditched plans for British passport lanes at airports when he became Home Secretary in April after concluding that they would be too costly and could end up increasing waiting times.

However, Mrs May believes dedicated passport lanes for British travellers will be an “important sign that Brexit has happened”, according to sources, and will insist they go ahead.

Mr Javid disagreed with Mrs May over her post-brexit customs plan and has taken a softer line than the Prime Minister over reducing immigration below 100,000.

Meanwhile, an internal City of London report to be published next month will predict the UK financial services sector will lose between 5,000 and 13,000 jobs to other countries because of Brexit. The figure is far lower than previous estimates of up to 200,000, which had been criticised as part of “project fear”. Analysts now admit predictions of a “Brexodus” of City jobs were wide of the mark, with just 1,600 jobs lost abroad so far, according to Charles Bowman, the Lord Mayor of the City of London.
