The summer Elysée Macron’s holiday home

-

Theresa May will become the first foreign dignitary to visit Mr Macron at his “summer Elysée” since he decided to turn an old fortress on the Riviera into France’s Camp David.

The Fort de Brégançon is perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Mediterranean, with its own helipad and private beach surrounded by vineyards.

Mr Macron is due to spend two and a half weeks there starting today with his wife Brigitte.

Given the current heatwave, the Macrons may well invite their British guests for a dip in the pool that the French president controversially installed at a cost of €34,000.

It does provide privacy, unlike Brégançon’s private beach, which is easy prey for paparazzi.

A military fortress for centuries, Brégançon was turned into an official residence by Charles de Gaulle in 1968.

François Hollande, Mr Macron’s predecessor, ditched the fort after staying there in 2014 during an economic crisis, sending his popularity into a tailspin.
