Rap that glorifies violence loved by disaffected
Drill music is a form of rap that has been accused of glorifying gang violence and has been linked to a number of London killings. Originating in Chicago, it has raw and dark lyrics that focus on crime, drugs and weapons. British drill music was developed in Brixton and quickly grew in popularity among disaffected youngsters. Fans often use Youtube and Facebook to promote their favourite artists and also to goad rivals with inflammatory lyrics. Police have criticised aspects of it for encouraging gang violence. Earlier this year, Cressida Dick, the Met Police chief, called on social media giants to remove drill music videos, claiming that it was provocative and contributed to rising levels of violent crime. She said: “They describe stabbing with great detail, and great joy.”
