A teenager who thinks her mum dresses well? Wow...

Endorsement: 15-year-old Carys Zeta Douglas cites her mother, actress Catherine Zeta-jones, as her style icon

-

Carys Zeta Douglas has been bullied at school because her father, Michael Douglas, is so old. I’m not sure there’s much to be said, apart from “children are horrible, so don’t have any. Especially not when you are 58.”

Far more interesting is that she cites her mother, Catherine, 48, as her style icon. Wow. Coming from a teenager, that is some endorsement.

My inhouse fashion arbiter is aged 16 and far more Devil Wears Prada as she looks me up and down, while I wait breathlessly for that almost imperceptible Meryl Streep nod that says “you look surprisingly well put‑together”.

This week, when I tried on my new retro cheesecloth sundress, I was scrutinised with even more silent deliberation than usual before the hammer blow fell.

“It doesn’t make you look old or fat, but you do look cheap.” And you know what, dear readers? I took that as a compliment.
