Chinese activist goes missing after police raid
A CRITIC of China’s government has gone missing after police entered his home in the middle of a telephone interview with a television network.
Retired academic Sun Wenguang was speaking live to a Mandarinlanguage TV show for Voice of America (VOA) when at least eight officers showed up at his home in Jinan.
“The police are here to interrupt again,” Mr Sun told the interviewer in his audio broadcast. “It’s illegal for you to come to my home. I have my freedom of speech,” he added before being forced off the air. The incident came after Mr Sun recently criticised President Xi Jinping for putting foreign investment ahead of domestic spending.
As one of China’s oldest dissidents, the 84-year-old is kept under regular surveillance and was jailed for speaking out against the ruling Communist Party in the past. A spokesman for VOA said the network was “monitoring the situation closely”.
