Rare Japanese bears find new home in Yorkshire

-

Four endangered brown bears have been relocated from Japan to start a new life in Doncaster after the animals were stuck in outdated cages and urgently needed new homes.

In a precision-planned, 5,000-mile trip, Riku, Kai, Hanako and Amu left the Ainu Cultural Museum, on the island of Hokkaido, and were taken to their new home at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

The Ussuri brown bears, also known as black grizzlies, can weigh as much as 550kg and live up to 35 years. The species is on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
