Three Godfathers (1948) TCM, 3.25PM ★★★  This classic western directed by John Ford is something of a retelling of the story of The Three Wise Men, or a precursor of Three Men and a Baby. Three bank robbers, played by John Wayne, Harry Carey Jr and Pedro Armendáriz, go on the run and end up stranded in Death Valley, where they come across a wagon in which a woman is giving birth. When she dies, they are tasked with the job of looking after the newborn.

Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) FILM4, 9.00PM ★★★★  Elizabeth Banks’s follow-up to the 2012 hit about an all-girl a cappella group is a joyous harmony of bawdy humour, campus high jinks and crisp musical performances. It begins with the Barden Bellas – now in their final year of college and current national champions – embarrassing themselves onstage. To redeem themselves they need to beat the amazing group, Das Sound Machine, and win the world championships.

Twelve Monkeys (1995) BBC FOUR, 10.00PM ★★★★  Terry Gilliam’s superb postapocalyptic sci-fi film, inspired by Chris Marker’s 1962 short film La jetée, is a dark vision of an Earth infected with a virus that has forced the human race to live underground. James Cole (Bruce Willis) is the man chosen to find samples of the virus from the surface. Brad Pitt plays a fanatical mental patient with delirious intensity, and Gilliam’s destroyed world is terrifyingly haunting.
