SIR – The energy officials now warning that those without a smart meter will end up paying a higher price for their energy assume the public to be naive in the extreme.

Variable pricing will raise charges in peak periods. Surge pricing in 30-minute windows will always be retrospect­ive, making it nigh on impossible to plan ahead. “Oops, you’ve just boiled your kettle in a mini peak,” will be the attitude of suppliers with a licence to print money. Ian Robertson
