I’m not sure I’ve ever thought of horizontal stripes as “signposting the audacious”, as this arts documentary has it, but they’re certainly an aesthetic tic that appears everywhere. Not just a classic design for a beach dress, stripes are apparently key to the compositions of Brueghel paintings and the structure of the Bible, always invoking the idea of the infinite horizon. Presenter Teresa Monachino brings new meaning to lateral thinking through this pan-cultural riff on Cocteau’s maxim that “Life is a horizontal fall”.
