What’s new?

A big hole. It looked like we might be talking about this a year ago, but they hung onto him: now Leicester must adapt to life without their brilliant attacking creator, Riyad Mahrez. At least they reinvested on the last day of the window by signing Filip Benkovic and Caglar Soyuncu.

Most exciting signing

James Maddison is tipped as a potential future England star, plays in a similar sort of role to Dele Alli, and has a £22million price tag around his neck. The boots of Mahrez will take some filling.

How will they play?

Same as ever, really, using Jamie Vardy’s fantastic pace and appetite for running the channels, a solid back four and a couple of hard workers in midfield.

Who has it all to prove?

Demarai Gray (below) has huge talent and should improve on his three goals last term: with his pace and movement, he looks exactly the sort of player who might force himself into Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Who will be player of the year?

Perhaps cult favourite Harry Maguire, perhaps goal machine Vardy, but it might well be that Kasper Schmeichel is even more valuable over the course of the season.

Manager’s survival rating

Very low. Claude Puel only clung on last season. Finishing ninth and 12th, as they have done in the last two years, would be fine for Leicester had expectations not been inflated by the astonishing title win in 2015-16. 3/10

If they were a World Cup side they would be …

England: won it once, meaning that everyone has stupidly high expectations forever more.
