Take your seat
SIR – LNER plans to introduce a “traffic light” system to indicate which seats are free on trains (report, August 8).
However, many “reserved” seats can go unoccupied because the reserver is sitting in a more desirable seat next to a window, facing forward or at a table.
Perhaps railway companies should issue a surcharge for those who are on the correct train but not sitting in their reserved seat. The instruction to sit in your reserved seat could be added to the lengthening “welcome aboard” announcements at the start of the journey and after every stop.
