Former Uruguay leader won’t claim his pension
José Mujica, the former president of Uruguay, once known as the world’s poorest leader on account of his modest lifestyle, will not take his pension after resigning as a senator.
Mr Mujica, 83, a former guerrilla leader, was president from 2010 to 2015. His social reforms, such as the legalisation of marijuana and gay marriage, made him popular abroad, but critics said he failed to deal with problems in education, security and environmental protection.
