Fortnite gamers’ data for sale on dark web
HACKERS are selling Fortnite users’ details on the dark web so that criminals can rack up huge game bills, an investigation has found.
Independent experts monitoring the illicit online marketplace revealed yesterday that they have discovered offers of children and adult gamers’ log-ins and passwords for sale for an average of just £2.05 each.
Purchasing these details enables buyers to amass inplay charges for free, because their unwittingly hacked victims will end up being charged instead.
The Fortnite fraud market was uncovered by Virtual Private Network (VPN) comparison service TOP10VPN. com. Simon Migliano, its head of research, said: “The temptation for criminals is both the breadth of Fortnite’s users – many of whom are children or teenagers – but also the way the game makes its money. In ‘traditional’ games, players pay a one-off fee to access the content.
“But Fortnite is free to access before quickly inviting users to buy cosmetic items and passes that can earn rewards.”
Fortnite is one of the world’s most successful games with over 125million players worldwide and an estimated 40million playing monthly.
