Mali leader re-elected after landslide victory

Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has been re-elected Mali’s president for five years after a landslide win amid a jihadist insurgency raging in the Sahel.

Keita, 73, beat Soumaïla Cisse, 68, a former finance minister who also ran against him in 2013, with 67 per cent of the vote on Sunday. Turnout was low, at 34.5 per cent.

Mr Cisse’s party has vowed to contest the results as the country battles a year-long Islamic revolt that has fuelled intercommunal violence in which hundreds of people have died.
