SIR – Over-familiarity at the checkout (Letters, August 16) seems to be an increasingly popular trend.

In my local supermarket, if my basket contained a quantity of alcohol, I have been asked if I am holding a party. For some irrational reason I find this very irritating. Jeremy Prescott
