Baby born in helicopter while in flight at 1,400ft

A coastguard helicopter turned airborne maternity unit when a baby boy was born while the aircraft was in flight at 1,400ft. The baby was born on board the helicopter over Penzance, Cornwall, after his mother went into labour while visiting the Isles of Scilly.

During the incident on Saturday, the helicopter collected a midwife, touched down at St Mary’s Airport and picked up the woman and her partner. At 8.53pm, with the help of the midwife and aircrew, the baby boy was born.
