Return of Farage

-

SIR – Thank goodness that Nigel Farage (Commentary, August 18) is supporting Richard Tice and John Longworth’s Leave Means Leave campaign.

For all their fine words, Jacob Rees-mogg, Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and David Davis have done little to secure a true Brexit. Let’s hope it’s not too late. Where do I volunteer?

SIR – For me, Nigel Farage joining the Leave Means Leave campaign is like my favourite football club signing the best footballer in the world.

SIR – It is telling that Mr Farage should state that “the time has come to teach them [Remainers] a lesson – one that they will never forget”.

In other words, he wants total victory over half of the population – hardly a recipe for bringing the country together after two years of division.

SIR – Frederick Forsyth (Letters, August 17) says that a national referendum is a variant of a general election.

The 2015 general election took place on the understanding that it was not binding for ever, but that it would not be repeated for five years. Only two years later, however, Parliament thought that the feelings of the electorate had changed, and another general election was held.

According to Mr Forsyth’s logic, there is no reason why we should not have a repeat of the national referendum now, more than two years later, if there is an indication that the wishes of the electorate have changed.
