GOLDMAN SACHS has become the first company in Britain to pay to courier new mothers’ breast milk home from anywhere in the world while they are away on business.

The investment bank told its workers in an internal memo that new mothers based in London would be reimbursed for shipping costs incurred on work trips. The bank will also pay for them to hire a hotel room fridge.

In a memo, it said: “To further support the firm’s commitment to working parents, the Human Capital Management division recently launched breast milk shipping programmes globally for working mothers who are travelling on firm business. Through Lifecare’s milkship, a full-service programme, which is available at no cost, working mothers who are based in the US can safely ship their breast milk home when on business travel. “For employees outside the US, the firm provides reimbursement for breast milk shipping costs … for nursing mothers who are travelling overnight for business purposes. These can include overnight and expedited shipping expenses as well as in-room refrigerator costs.”

“We want our employees to feel fulfilled, both personally and professionally,” said Laura Young, global head of wellness. “However, being a parent, with all its rewards, can bring its own unique set of challenges.

“As such, we continuously look to provide our people with programmes and services to support them in navigating the day-to-day issues that arise while empowering them with the tools to be successful at home and at work.”

Goldman employs 6,000 people in London. American firms such as Twitter, IBM and Accenture offer a milkshipping service to staff within the US.
