BBC to use subtitles in new Japan drama

A NEW BBC drama will contain “significant” subtitles while characters speak at length in Japanese, the corporation revealed yesterday as it said “creative risk” is required to be successful.

BBC Two and Netflix have announced that their new eight-part drama Giri/haji will have one of the highest proportions of subtitles of any BBC original drama series in order to make the show authentic.

The drama, set in London and Tokyo, whose title translates as Duty/shame will follow a Japanese man whose brother goes missing.

He then travels to London in search of answers and soon becomes drawn into the city’s darker side.

Piers Wenger, controller of BBC Drama said: “I want us [BBC] to be less bound by conventions of genre, slot and channel even when considering new work.

The show will be on screen next year.

The recent BBC series Mcmafia was criticised after including subtitles in some Russian scenes.
