Useful churches

-

SIR – It is not, as your headline suggests, “churchgoers” who tend to get in the way of church building projects (report, August 21). In fact, in ruling that a church should be allowed to remove its pews, Chancellor June Rodgers warned that the wishes of the congregation are too often blocked by “professional objectors” who “can be indifferent to the actual use of a church”.

While there are doubtless Christians in the ranks of the Victorian Society, the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and Heritage England, in my experience these are the organisations that make it hard for churchgoers to develop their churches to meet the needs of the 21st century.
