Lost post

SIR – Upon returning from the post office yesterday morning, I read your story about Royal Mail’s “disappearing parcels” (August 21).

I had received a parcel well secured with orange plastic twine. When I packed it for return I used the same twine to secure it, but was told at the post office that parcels could no longer be tied with string, and was handed a pair of scissors and some rather inadequate-looking sticky tape. I would not be at all surprised if my parcel now comes apart in the post.

Who made this stupid decision? Philip Jarrett
