Chinese flock for fish and chips in Mandarin

- By Francesca Marshall

A FISH and chip shop in Yorkshire has translated its menu into Mandarin after being overrun by Chinese tourists who have developed a taste for the dish.

Scotts Fish and Chips near York produced the new menu after seeing an upsurge in Chinese visitors.

Their passion for the British tradition is said to be the result of Xi Jinping, the Chinese president, sharing a plate of fish and chips with David Cameron, then the prime minister, in 2015.

Roxy Vasai, its manager, said more than 100 Chinese tourists were visiting every week. “It really has taken off – the word seems to have spread quickly among the Chinese community’,” she told The Daily Telegraph.

“It definitely stemmed from the Chinese premier being here and now they all want to try what he tried and get a taste for a classic British dish. I’m sure it won’t be just us experiencing this change. When we see the coach arrive we’re all ready and we know they will all be excited, and we think translating the menu gives them more options on what they might like to order.”

The chippy has also translated its menu into Cantonese. Staff said visitors were often keen to make an occasion out of their visit with many posing with employees for photographs at the shop, on the A64 at Bilbrough Top.
