Ugandan pop star charged with treason

-

A Ugandan pop star-turned-politician who opposes Yoweri Museveni, the president, was charged with treason in a civilian court yesterday, minutes after a military court dropped weapons charges against him.

Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, 36, known as Bobi Wine, said he was severely beaten in detention.

The treason charge, which carries the death penalty, comes after an incident in which Mr Museveni’s motorcade was pelted with stones.
