Walk and lose a stone
SIR – Kevin Leece (Letters, August 24) notes that, on Alfred Wainwright’s coast-to-coast walk, a pebble is taken from the beach at the start, at St Bees, and carried 192 miles to Robin Hood’s Bay. Readers need not worry, though, about the sinking of the coast under the weight of stones deposited there.
A group of 12 and I walked the coast-to-coast in the opposite direction some years back, and I am proud that we did our bit to redress the imbalance. It is a great way to do the walk.
