Hooray for wicker bicycle basket swapping day

sir – You report (August 18) that people who practise kerbside recycling may face fines for fly‑tipping. Yet it makes perfect sense to let others take away goods in this way.

I suggest we adopt the very successful method that we have seen in Germany and the Netherlands. On an agreed day each month, everyone who wishes to put out larger items can do so between certain hours.

When staying with friends in Germany, we enjoyed an interesting walk to see what items were on offer. We delighted our hostess with a large wicker bicycle basket and two garden trellises. We ourselves gained a chunky stool.

Lots of people were out looking at things. Both donors and new owners were pleased.
