Up in arms
Has poor Richard III not suffered enough already? Not only was he buried under a car park in Leicester, but now his final battleground is subject to a fight potentially more ferocious than Bosworth itself. Plans are afoot to turn part of the land, owned by Japanese automotive specialists Horiba Mira, into a 155mph test-track for driverless cars. Historic England, with whom the site where Henry Tudor first saw Richard’s army is registered as a battle zone, is already gearing up for the fray and has written to the council arguing that the proposal will cause harm and destroy archaeological evidence. What Richard himself would have thought about it will remain a mystery. But if a race track must be built, might it not at least be one where you could – as he surely would have wished – actually win?
