TUC to allow motions for a second Brexit referendum
JEREMY CORBYN will next month face pressure from union leaders to back a second referendum on Brexit, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.
Two motions to be debated at the TUC annual congress in Manchester call for unions to campaign for a second referendum on Britain’s exit from the European Union.
It came as Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, suggested that those campaigning for a second referendum on Brexit are “arrogant” and warned that it risks “inflaming” resentment.
Labour is split over a second vote, with Sir Keir Starmer, the shadow Brexit secretary, last week refusing to rule one out, and Barry Gardiner, another frontbencher, saying it would risk civil disobedience.
In an interview with the Politico website, Mr Burnham said: “My frustration with those leaping to a second referendum is it further inflames this idea of an arrogant political class, which isn’t listening and isn’t dealing with the issues that gave rise to the referendum in the first place. What we need is the most pragmatic, practical, bridge-building Brexit.”
The People’s Vote campaign is working with MPS and activists to submit a motion to change policy at the Labour conference next month so the party backs a vote on the final Brexit deal.
In a leaked email, campaign bosses said: “We have had extensive discussions among key Labour people in the campaign and agreed it would be sensible to write and publish our own draft resolution for conference.”
