A well-earned drink after a day on the farm

-

sir – Debora Robertson (Comment, August 25) doesn’t like the idea of “life without alcohol”.

Now in my 85th year, I work up to 60 hours a week over the summer in a farm-related job. I enjoy a glass of red wine with my dinner every night. It’s a great life.

Sir – I am not surprised that British women are among the world’s biggest drinkers (report, August 25), given how TV soaps depict the opening of a bottle of wine as soon as people get home from work as the norm. What happened to the nice cup of tea? Producers should try to reverse this worrying trend.

Diana Jones London N12

Sir – My husband and I don’t touch alcohol, purely because we don’t like it. We still manage to have fun.
