Take style tips from Mum while you still can
Breaking news from clan Beckham: seven-yearold Harper has a new haircut. Of course she does, directional new haircuts are what brand Beckham does; being the pivotal part of their iconography in the way red-headedness was for the Tudors. What is striking about Harper’s new do is that it is a bob, or rather a “pob” – the very style that that her mother, Victoria, made fashionable in the Nineties.
Posting to her 22.2million Instagram followers, the pop star-turned-fashion designer cooed: “Haircut for our baby girl…#howchic.” Queen V should enjoy it while she can, for seven is the last age at which anyone wants to look like her mother. As Victoria does groomed, so Harper will go grunge, seeking buzz cuts as her mother craves blow dries.
I’m used to having my mother’s face, but only now, in my 40s and three years since her death, have I realised what it is to have her hair. In my youth, how I mocked her struggles with the fine, limp strands with which she was locked in daily combat. Well, the joke’s now on me as I battle with brushes and dry shampoo – anything so my hair is not plastered to my head.
