What is FMS? Women most at risk from syndrome
Fibromyalgia, also called fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), is a long-term condition that causes widespread pain, increased sensitivity, muscle stiffness, headaches and intense fatigue. The condition typically develops between the ages of 30 and 50, but can occur at any age, and affects around seven times as many women as men. Symptoms are sometimes so severe that sufferers are unable to hold down a job. The exact cause is unknown but it is thought to be related to abnormal levels of chemicals in the brain and in many cases appears to be triggered by a physically or emotionally stressful event. There is currently no cure but it can be treated with antidepressants, painkillers, talking therapies, counselling and lifestyle changes.
