BBC’S Bodyguard is a bit close to home for me, says May

THERESA May has said she is not watching the BBC’S hit series The Bodyguard because a racy drama about a fictional female home secretary would make it difficult for her to “unwind”.

The Prime Minister and former home secretary, who is a well-known fan of Bake Off, said that she watched “television to unwind” and believed the drama sailed too close to home.

The series sees Keeley Hawes play fictional home secretary Julia Montague, with Richard Madden as the bodyguard assigned to protect her. The steamy political thriller chronicles the growing love affair between the pair.

The first episode pulled 6.9million viewers last Sunday and has received widespread praise. However, The Daily Telegraph understands that Mrs May watched just 20 minutes before switching it off. Yesterday, during the final leg of her trip to Africa, Mrs May said: “I watch TV to unwind – I’m not sure a drama about a female home secretary is the best way for me to do that.”
