Film choice
Strictly Ballroom (1992)
BBC TWO, 1.00PM ★★★★
The curiously androgynous Paul Mercurio plays a rebellious ballroom dancer who breaks all the rules and paso-dobles his way to victory in this crowd-pleasing Australian comedy. Baz Luhrmann’s writing-directing debut is just as brash as Moulin Rouge! but a lot less pleased with itself. There’s romance between our hero and his partner, but it’s set against an enjoyable parade of sequin-decked caricatures and high camp.
Pitch Perfect 3 (2017)
SKY MOVIES PREMIERE, 8.00PM ★★
The last film in the comedy franchise about fictional college a cappella group the Barden Bellas may not live up to the hype created by its surprisingly brilliant 2012 debut, but it remains an entertaining treat. The Bellas return with a tracklist that includes Britney Spears and Sia, and a charismatic new nemesis in Ruby Rose. This film might be one of the trilogy not to shout about, but it should keep fans happy.
The King’s Speech (2010)
BBC ONE, 10.35PM; N IRELAND, 11.05PM; WALES, 11.35PM ★★★★★
Tom Hooper’s excellent film about the future King George VI’S struggle to overcome his stammer in the nation’s hour of need won multiple Oscars, including a deserved Best Actor for Colin Firth. But it’s Firth’s double-act with Geoffrey Rush as the king’s speech therapist Lionel Logue that gives the film its heart and the double-handers between them are fraught and fascinating.
