Is it too late for Labour to retreat from Corbyn’s extreme Left ideology?

-

SIR – For some time this newspaper has encouraged moderate Labour MPS to stand up and be counted before it is too late for the party to retreat from extreme Left-wing politics.

However, it would appear that Tony Blair is not sure that such a thing is possible, and the founder of Momentum, Jeremy Corbyn’s Praetorian Guard, has stated that “the party would never return to Blair’s policies”. The fact that those policies won the Labour Party three general elections seems lost on those with such an ideology.

But the question remains as to where the so-called moderates have gone. Have bullying and intimidation perhaps won the day? Brian Pegnall

SIR – It was thought that Tony Blair had his cap set on the top EU post as a way back into limelight politics, but Brexit has probably scuppered this.

So is he now thinking of linking up with Sir Vince Cable to form a new party? I shudder to think of such a scenario. Gerry Doyle

SIR – Mark Wallace (telegraph.co.uk, September 1) blames the Conservatives for the rise of Jeremy Corbyn. But a crucial role was played by Ed Miliband, who in 2015 lost a general election he had had a reasonable chance of winning. He then resigned, having changed the voting system for party leader, enabling Corbyn backers to become “registered supporters” of the party for £3 and get their man in.

Mr Miliband’s failure was far greater than the Conservatives’ in enabling Mr Corbyn to hijack the Labour Party. Michael Wood-wilson

SIR – While the Conservatives have been focusing on (or distracted by) Brexit, the focus of criticism of Labour has been on anti-semitism.

The continuing turmoil around Brexit means a Labour government is now a real possibility. It is time for Government ministers to highlight all of the other problems with the radical Left-wing government-in-waiting, one that is not only anti-semitic but would sacrifice the defence of the country through disarmament, bankrupt the country with economic policies that have never worked anywhere in the world (and recently bankrupted Venezuela) and one that would restrict what the press publishes and its opponents say. SIR – Allister Heath’s article (“It’s time to expose the horrifying logic of hard-left anti-zionism”, Comment, September 6) made grim reading.

Attempting to “engage” with a Left-wing activist in Edinburgh last weekend, I was told: “Look at the numbers, pal. Trash the Jews and we guarantee the Muslim vote.”

I don’t think he was jesting. Guy Bargery
